I never believed that anyone that rises to that level of rank and command is incompetent to the level that some have suggested. And it is oh so true as we career military know, and just as much today, the closer to DC the worse the scrutiny. He should not have worn his heart on his sleeve and put his complaints to pen in his personal letters. It just goes to show that no matter who you are talking about, be it McClellan, or Lee, or Joe Johnston, or Grant, or anyone for that matter, the simple overall characterizations we so often hear do not do these men justice. After reading Rafuse, I wondered if Lincoln (and his Cabinet) felt they politically could not afford to have a Whig turned Democrat rise as the nation's hero. He did exactly what Lincoln needed... he put the army on sound organizational and logistical footing, he protected Washington, and he ejected the invaders. With those things accomplished and the elections over, Lincoln and the Cabinet could now find the politically correct commander they desired.<br />Ron DickeyAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3202206756122982360.post-68500897585529344422011-10-05T23:26:54.941-04:002011-10-05T23:26:54.941-04:00Thanks for your review Tom. I have had this post in my head for awhile and I have used some or all of these points when talking to visitors at the park. Regards.
